Kid talk

Every single day, the kids say things that make us laugh, smile, and wonder, and I'm so not good at writing these things down! But I should, because otherwise I know I'll forget them.

Jayna's vocabulary and conversational abilities have grown by leaps and bounds in the recent months. We're now to the point where we understand pretty much everything she says, though I'm not sure if others can or not. A few phrases that we have heard more than once:

"Weed a book a may": Read a book to me?
"Ont a watt a woogie?": Want to watch a movie?
"Doddit moke": chocolate milk
"Daddy deepin": Daddy sleeping

Travis as at the age where the things he says can be surprising, and/or can just be downright funny! It's so fun to see how his mind works. A few conversations fresh in my mind...

-I don't know how this came up, but Travis asked me what the word "wisdom" meant, and I gave him a basic definition. He said, "Ooooohhh. (as in "aha!") Mommy, I fink you are the wisdomest mommy on all the earf." I cracked up. I also love how his "th" still comes out "f".

-Travis' vocab has also been expanding to include some very adult words, and he almost always uses them in the right context. But sometimes he tries out words when he's only heard/noticed them once or twice, and he'll botch the pronunciation. As we were eating lunch one day, I asked Jayna if she was all done. She didn't answer, I asked again. Then Travis said, "Allparlently, she's not".

-One of Travis' best qualities is his compassion for others. I had a killer headache last week, and he came to me as I sat down to rest and rub my head, and asked "why I was sad". I told him I had a headache. After asking me all about headaches (seriously, like 50 "why" questions regarding headaches), he said "Here. I will kiss it. No, I will kiss it AND rub it." He did just that, then said, "There, you are all better". I didn't have the heart to tell him otherwise. :)

-Along the same lines....Travis recently had his 4-year check up with our pediactrician, whom Travis loves. After Dr. Reid left (telling us what a healthy boy Travis was), and before the nurses came in to give the dreaded shots, I told Travis about how we should thank God that he is healthy. I told him that there were kids all around the world who were not healthy, they were very sick and had no way of getting better. At this, Travis was visibly concerned, but then I thought he forgot about the conversation in the chaos of receiving shots. After the shots (not a fun experience), and after we returned to our car and we were driving home in a rare moment of silence, Travis said totally out of the blue, "Mommy, I fink those kids need to come see Dr. Reid." Sweet boy. If only it were that easy to solve the problems of this world.
